Indicators for Assessing Progress towards the 2010 Biodiversity Target
Background
The Conference of the Parties (COP), in decisions VII/8 (paras 14 and 16) and VII/30 (para 13 (b)),
requested the Executive Secretary to use the Clearing-house mechanism (CHM) of the Convention to
promote technical cooperation, facilitate information exchange and identify areas with potential
for better coordination and integration between sets of indicators relevant to the 2010 biodiversity
target and the various programmes of work and cross-cutting themes of the Convention.
For each of the headline indicators for assessing progress towards the 2010 Biodiversity Target,
specific national, regional and global indicators and/or data sets, including a detailed
characterization of the methods and technical limitations, are provided. This information should
assist countries that have not done so to develop relevant biodiversity indicators.
Please contribute to this system to make it a more valuable resource for information sharing
about biodiversity indicators by reviewing existing records and entering additional national,
regional and/or global data sets.
