Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing
Case Studies

Under various decisions of the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties, Governments, international agencies, research institutions, representatives of indigenous and local communities and non-governmental organizations were invited to submit case studies to the Executive Secretary on different thematic areas and cross-cutting issues. These include case studies related to agricultural biological diversity (decision III/11, paragraphs 10, 11 and annex 3); access to and sharing of benefits arising out of the use of genetic resources (decision III/15, paragraph 2(a)); incentive measures leading to benefit-sharing (decision III/18, paragraph 7).

In order to assist the preparation of case studies, the Secretariat developed an indicative outline for case studies on benefit-sharing arrangements available on the web. A synthesis of the findings of case studies received in time for the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties is contained in document UNEP/CBD/COP/4/Inf.7 available in PDF format.

At its sixth meeting, in decision VI/24 on Access and Benefit-sharing as related to genetic resources, in paragraph 6 of section D, the Conference of the Parties requested Parties and relevant organizations to make available to the Executive Secretary: …(b) case studies on the implementation of access and benefit-sharing arrangements. The Conference of the Parties also requested the Executive Secretary to compile the information received and to make it available, through, inter alia, the Clearing House Mechanism.

The case studies received are posted in the format received as well as in PDF format. In cases where Parties or relevant organizations post their case studies on their web-sites, the Secretariat has created the necessary link.

The following table includes case studies received by the Secretariat since COP 3, listed by alphabetical order of the Country for those submitted by Governments under section I, and by alphabetical order of the authors for the case studies under section II:
