Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention (WGRI)

The seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties established the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention (WGRI) to consider progress in the implementation of the Convention, the Strategic Plan and achievements leading up to the 2010 Target. The first meeting of the Working Group was held in September 2005 in Montreal. The final report, recommendations and documents of this meeting are available here. The eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties further decided that the Working Group will undertake an in-depth review of the implementation of goals 2 and 3 of the Strategic Plan (excluding consideration of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety), in accordance with decision VIII/8 and decision VIII/13 on national biodiversity strategies and action plans, financial resources and the financial mechanism. The "Voluntary Guidelines to Parties for the Review of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans", also adopted by COP-8, are annexed to decision VIII/8.

Framework for Assessments of Implementation (UNEP-WCMC)

Additionally, work on developing methodologies for assessing national implementation of the Convention has been undertaken by UNEP's World Conservation Monitoring Centre. In a pilot project, these methodologies have been used in the assessment of implementation in selected CEE/NIS countries.
