Eighth Conference of the Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region, 12-14 August 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska

The Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region is a parliamentary body comprising delegations appointed by the national parliaments of the Arctic states (Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, U.S.A.) and the European Parliament. The conference also includes Permanent Participants representing Indigenous peoples, as well as observers. The conference meets every two years. More »

High-level dialogue with Parliamentarians during COP 9, 19-30 May 2008, Bonn, Germany

At the initiative of the Environment Committee of the German Parliament, and in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Parliamentarians of the world have been invited to a meeting to be held on Tuesday 27 May at the margins of the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention. This dialogue aims to highlight the important role of Parliamentarians in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use and commemorate the engagement of Parliamentarians across the world toward the enhanced phase of implementation of the Convention. European Parliament Resolution on the preparation of MOP 4-COP 9 meeting, 24 April 2008

Members of the European Parliament are increasingly concerned about the continued loss of biodiversity which consequences extend well beyong the European Union's boundaries. In order to support preparations of the fourth meeting of the Parties to the Biosafety Protocol and the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, they adopted a resolution calling on the Commission and the Member States to show leadership and conviction by agreeing to and facilitating concrete measures for the protection of biodiversity, both domestically and internationally. 118th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, 13 April to 18 April 2008, Cape Town, South Africa

The 118th Inter-Parliamentary Union assembly focused on several topics. Items addressed during the meeting included a general debate on the political, economic and social situation in the world with the overall theme of Pushing back the frontiers of poverty, and the role of parliaments and the Inter-Parliamentary Union in ensuring an immediate halt to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in conflict areas and its environmental dimension.
