In 2002, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a Strategic Plan that aims to achieve, by 2010, a significant reduction in the current rate of biodiversity loss. Included in the plan is a set of goals and objectives that contribute to the achievement of the 2010 target. Objective 4.4 of the plan is to engage “key actors and stakeholders, including the private sector… in partnership to implement the Convention.” This objective reflects the importance of collaborating with the private sector, which has major impacts on biodiversity, in order to meet the 2010 target.
